Rafting on the Lehigh 09

On our second journey to the Lehigh River, we had the pleasure of having our friends the Kramers, Addisons and Wilsons accompany us on another exciting  journey down the murkey waters of the northern PA river.  We had so many good memories about the previous trip, that our excitement infected the spirits of our friends.

As we prepared our rafts for the adventure, our friends looked up to us as the “veterans” to lead the way and show them how to navigate the cool winding river near the town of Jim Thorpe.  I of course relished the role as the lead guide who would blaze a watery trail through the waters of Lehigh.  The tour, which we were a part of was lead by the Whitewater Rafting Adventure company, which had approximatly 15 dark green boats on the water.  When the river guides gave us the okay, all of us carried our rafts into the water, jumped in and started paddling. Rahesha, Roshawn, Kameron and myself made up the crew of our raft, and with our veteran skills we stroked into the forefront of all the boats in our group.  With me sitting in the back guiding our grand raft, the four of us smiled in satisfaction as we stroked in rhythm, easily outpacing  the remainder of the rafts in our wagon train.  However, as we approached a rough portion of the water, we lost our rhythm, and our raft started to spin in circles.  While spinning in circles, the other rafts from our group began to approach as they found their rhythm.  Although I was in the back of the boat, my back was actually facing front, and I was encouraging my crew to find their stroke and swing us around, when suddenly,  I felt the raft lurch downwards. I turned and looked behind me just in time to see the raft heading over a rock and down a three foot dip.  As our raft tipped downwards I fell back, and as I fell back Rahesha fell into me and we were tossed over the side along with our oars! The water was only about four feet deep, but the current was so fast and the rocks were so slippery that I couldn’t gain any purchase to stand.   I grabbed the handholds on the side of the raft, and I snaked my hand out and grabbed a hold of Rahesha’s life vest and pulled her to the boat.  All the while I could feel the cold water rushing by as we traveled alongside the boat.  Rahesha panicked a little because she thought that Kameron fell out of the boat, but he didn’t.  He however, was upset because he thought his parents were gone.  As I continued to try to gain  my orientation, my big toe hit a rock and began to throb, and one of my shoes fell off of my foot.  Once I calmed Rahesha,  I swam across the current with the raft in tow, until I came to a rock outcropping in the water that was about two feet deep.  We all jumped in the raft, thanked God and kept on going.  While all of this was going on, a nearby raft collected my missing shoe and oar, and the Wilsons had grabbed Rosahwn’s oar and we were back in business, although more humble! LOL!

Now that I have told you about our hair raising experience, don’t think we are done rafting!  This is a family float rafting trip.  There are only 3 rough areas on this trip.  The only reason why were were tossed, is because we weren’t paying attention when we came up to that little dip.  This is still a great trip for kids ages 6 and up, and everyone is required to wear life vests.  Our friends enjoyed the trip so much that we have now decided to make it an annual family and friends event.  As you can see from the pictures above it looked bad.  Picture #1 is when I began to fall out of the boat when we hit the rock.  Picture #2 shows that am already under and Rahesha is now falling in behind me. Picture #3 shows us that we are all safe and sound, and as you can see I enjoyed the experience, although my family members were shaken.  I would love to thank the Whitewater Rafting Adventure photographer, who once again took some great photos!

I can’t wait until next year!

Rahesha and I are getting married again!

During our 13th Wedding Anniversary, I asked Rahesha to marry me again for our 15th Wedding Anniversary.  We never had a big wedding, we were just married by the justice of the peace.  This time we would like to have a wedding that is ordained by God and in God’s house.  We aren’t going to have a big super wedding, but a wedding nevertheless.  I hope you all will have the opportuntity to witness our Renaissance (rebirth) of love!

Kameron’s Report Card

Kameron’s report showed exceptional growth this marking period. He earned As and Bs, and is really starting to grasp concepts in reading and in math. What is really amazing, is that he is a history buff (just like the old man), and he really knows his military history. He loves watching the history channel and other programs dealing with building things.

Roshawn is Student of the Month for March 2008 & an Honor Roll Student!

Roshawn said he was called down to the principal’s office the other day, and he was scared.  As far as he knew he hadn’t done anything to warrant a call down to the office.  Needless to say, Roshawn was informed that he had been selected as the Student of the Month at Central Dauphin Middle School for the month of March. He received a $15 gift card to Borders as a reward. He was very proud of his accomplishment. I am glad this happened to him because every now and then he wants to show kids how tough he is, which is something all of us males want to do at some point, and I always tell him it is not worth it in this day and age.  I use examples of the students at my school who fight over the dumbest things and get suspensions or expelled.  He also has a friend that must have been suspended at least 3 times in the past month. This just demonstrated some of my lessons to him.  People do recognize and reward others who are hardworkers and have great attitudes.

Roshawn also earned honors again, and has been recognized as a potential candidate for the National Honors Society! He is definitely excelling in areas I did not, I am proud of him.

Roshawn’s 14th Birthday!

We celebrated Roshawn’s 14th Birthday on April 13th! What a blast we had! Rahesha and I gathered up Roshawn, his friends and brother and traveled to the Laser Dome in Lancaster, PA.  After 4 major battles in the dark confines of the Laser Dome building, I came out as the Master of our Party.  I had the most kills, and hits on the enemy base out of everyone in Roshawn’s party, plus I was ranked in the top 5 out of 40 other participants.  My days of playing army as a kid finally paid off, but enough about me!

After the Laser Dome, Roshawn and his buddies had a sleep over and played video games until the wee hours of the morning.

Now the funniest part of the entire b-day was the cake I bought.  When I went to the Giant, I ordered the largest cake that was visible in the display. I told the baker to “give me the largest cake,” as I pointed to the cake in the display. He asked me if I wanted a full sheet or half a sheet.  I once again pointed to the cake and said give me the largest, the full sheet. The cake that I pointed to cost $19.99, and it was to feed about 20 people. When I returned to the Giant the next day, the brought out this massive cake that was 18 inches wide and about 24 inches long. I said “That’s not my cake,” and they said “Yes it is, you ordered the full sheet.” I then told them that the cake I ordered was there in the display, and they said that was a half a sheet.  I then told them that this monstrosity they called a cake was not in the display at all, so how was I supposed to know a full sheet was bigger than the cake in the display. Not only was the cake humongous, but it cost $35 and fed 40-60 people. To make a long story short, I convinced them to sell me the cake for $19.99, but then I had to decide what to do with the cake because it wasn’t going to fit in my fridge.  Needless to say, everyone went home with huge chunks of cake!

An Expensive Lesson

This past weekend, I scolded Roshawn for hooking up the hose in the backyard and not unscrewing it right away during this cold spell we have been experiencing during the early Spring. I feared that the hose would freeze and burst the pipe.

Yesterday (Sunday 3/30) It was warm out, so I decided to wash the cars.  I turned on the hose in the front yard, and there was very little water pressure.  Rahesha ran outside yelling in a panic saying “There is water coming into the basement turn the water off!”  Much to my disgust, instead of scolding Roshawn, I should have scolded myself because I left the hose hooked up in the front yard. It froze and burst!  I ended up paying $169 for my lack of attentiveness.

Kameron is scheduled to visit the orthodontist this week to determine if he is going to need braces anytime soon.  For some reason Kameron is excited about it. Who could imagine that?
